This August, Falcon Sapphire successfully grew a 105 kg optical-quality sapphire crystal in Ventspils, the largest sapphire crystal ever grown in Latvia. The result marks an important step in our development and in Latvia’s high-value materials manufacturing.

Only a small number of European companies can produce large optical-quality sapphire. For customers in optics, medical technology, electronics, laser systems and other high-precision industries, that makes the location of production increasingly important.

Not a gemstone, but an advanced industrial material

The word “sapphire” usually brings to mind a blue gemstone. The material we produce is different: it is colourless, industrially grown, high-purity monocrystalline aluminium oxide.

Sapphire is one of the hardest transparent materials that can be manufactured. It resists scratching, heat, pressure, friction and chemical exposure, making it suitable for applications where ordinary glass and other transparent materials cannot provide the required durability.

It is used in watch crystals, protective elements for phone and satellite cameras, LED technology, high-power laser optics, windows for medical and scientific equipment, and components for electronics and semiconductor production.

For demanding optical systems, strength alone is not enough. The crystal must also have the crystalline quality and optical homogeneity required to transmit light consistently. That combination of optical performance and durability is what makes optical-quality sapphire valuable.

How a sapphire crystal is grown

The process begins at temperatures above 2,000 °C, where aluminium oxide is melted. A small sapphire seed crystal is introduced, and under carefully controlled conditions a single large monocrystal gradually grows around it.

Falcon Sapphire uses the Kyropoulos method, a technically demanding process suited to producing large crystals with high optical quality. Growth requires precise control throughout the cycle, followed by quality inspection before the material moves into cutting and precision processing.

Why European production matters

Historically, Russia played a significant role in large sapphire production, while a substantial share of today’s output is concentrated in China. Europe has relatively few producers capable of growing this material at scale.

At a time when European industry is strengthening supply-chain resilience and reducing dependence on external suppliers, production in Latvia offers customers a geographically closer and more traceable source. Falcon Sapphire brings the essential stages together in one location, from crystal growth and quality control to cutting and precision processing.

This capability also strengthens Latvia’s position in photonics, advanced materials and high-value manufacturing. Instead of supplying only raw materials or simple components, Latvia can produce a technologically complex material used by other advanced industries.
